Big overhauls fail; tiny habits compound. In fifteen years of coaching, the clients who change most are rarely the ones with the strictest plans — they are the ones who stack small wins until the wins run themselves. Here are the five habits we prescribe first, in order.
1. Drink Water Before Coffee
A tall glass of water before your morning coffee rehydrates after sleep, wakes up digestion, and — clients consistently report — reduces the mid-morning pastry hunt. Keep the glass by the coffee maker so the habit triggers itself.
2. Walk Ten Minutes After Dinner
Post-meal walks blunt blood-sugar spikes better than an extra hour at the gym later. Ten unhurried minutes around the block aids digestion and reliably improves sleep that same night. Invite someone and it becomes the best part of the day.
3. Add One Vegetable, Don't Subtract Anything
Addition beats restriction for beginners. Toss spinach into eggs, peppers into pasta, berries onto cereal. Crowding your plate with plants naturally displaces the rest — no willpower required, no forbidden foods to rebound on.
4. Set a Sleep Alarm
Not a wake alarm — a bedtime alarm. Short sleep raises hunger hormones and tanks food judgment the next day, undoing perfect meal plans. Protect seven to eight hours like a prescription, because metabolically, it is one.
5. Prep Tomorrow's Breakfast Tonight
Overnight oats, boiled eggs, or simply setting out the blender ingredients. Mornings run on autopilot, and a protein-rich breakfast quietly sets portion discipline for the entire day.
Stack Them Slowly
Add one habit every two weeks, never all five at once. Track with a simple checkmark calendar — streaks motivate more than scales. And when a habit breaks during travel or illness, restart with the easiest one. Comebacks, not perfection, are what compound.
